Ron Gilad Designer Ron Gilad (b. 1972), Israel.Ron Gilad Biography:Born in Israel in 1972, designer Ron Gilad studied industrial design at the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem. Between 1999 and 2001, he taught 3-D and conceptual design at the Shenkar College of Engineering and Design in Ramat Gan, Israel. He moved to New York in 2001, and cofounded the studio Designfenzider. Since 2006, he has taught at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. Ron Gilad's often minimalist designs include everything from jewelry to furniture and interiors. Through his work, he consistently attempts to deconstruct the function of a given object, and in the process redefines its purpose and context. His work is included in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York's Museum of Arts and Design, and the Tel Aviv Museum of Art, as well as multiple private collections.Ron Gilad Design:Ron Gilad's artful and playful approach has major firms lining up to commission new designs. Ron Gilad uses the word play repeatedly when he describes his approach to design. Gilad plays with angles. He plays with cubes. He plays with degrees. He especially likes to toy with perception, creating objects that seem to defy logic and utility, yet solve problems that we may never have known we had. “I'm like a child," says the Israeli-born designer. "My clients ask me to do one thing and I do another." In fact, Gilad points to his childhood in Tel Aviv, where he grew up in a Bauhaus apartment with very little, as the time he first began to see the world through specific filters. Ron Gilad had very few toys, so he learned to create something from nothing. Gilad does aim, however, to incorporate a touch of the ludicrous. His iconic Dear Ingo chandelier—16 task lamps-turned-retractable light fixture—created for the Dutch design firm Moooi is a case in point. So, too, is his cylindrical glass-plank bench for Dilmos Milano. Such witty minimalism has landed his work in the Metropolitan Museum of Art's permanent collection, and attracts an international clienteleRon Gilad Furniture and Lighting:A designer whose work ranges across art direction, furnishing and lamp designs, exhibitions, renovations, show room and point of sale set-ups.
