Her father was a noted journalist and founder of Il Convegno, a magazine, bookstore, theater and intellectual salon of the 1920's, which attracted international intellectuals and theater personalities, including James Joyce, Thomas Mann and Luigi Pirandello. Anna Castelli-Ferrieri studied architecture at the Milan Polytechnic, and as such one of the first women to do so. After graduating she married the chemist Giulio Castelli with whom she in 1949 founded Kartell, which was to become one of the most important European furniture manufactures. Additionally, she was also co-founder of the Italian Society for Industrial design. Until the late 1960s Anna Castelli-Ferrieri was principally active as an architect, designing amongst other buildings the Kartell headquarters. In 1969 Castelli-Ferrieri created her most famous furniture collection Componibili, a modular storage system.
