Ingo Maurer Biography
Ingo Maurer (1932–2019) was born on the island of Reichenau, Germany, the son of a fisherman. After training as a typographer in Switzerland and Germany, he pursued graphic design studies in Munich from 1954 to 1958. In 1960, Maurer moved to the United States, where he worked in New York and San Francisco as a freelance designer. He returned to Munich in 1963 and founded his own studio, Design M, in 1966. His very first lighting design, the Bulb Lamp, became an instant classic and remains a permanent fixture in MoMA’s design collection. In the late 1960s, he collaborated with Dorothee Becker to create Uten.Silo, a bold and playful wall organizer that also achieved design icon status. Both Bulb and Uten.Silo remain available through Stardust.

Ingo Maurer’s lighting designs transcend function and enter the realm of art. Known for their poetic, whimsical qualities, his lights captivate the imagination through playful forms, experimental materials, and a deep reverence for the emotional power of light. Since launching his studio in the 1960s, Maurer has created over 150 lighting designs and installations across the globe—from public art spaces and fashion runways to private homes and renowned museums. He was an early adopter of new lighting technologies, integrating LEDs, OLEDs, and unconventional materials into sculptural lighting pieces. Maurer’s legacy lives on in an extraordinary collection of lights that blend humor, elegance, and innovation. His work is included in major collections such as the Museum of Modern Art and Cooper Hewitt in New York.
Ingo Maurer Lamps
The Bulb Lamp, designed in 1966, remains one of the most iconic designs in modern lighting. Its playful exaggeration of a traditional lightbulb form encapsulates Maurer’s unique perspective on light as both functional and fantastical. Over the decades, Ingo Maurer produced numerous acclaimed lamps, including the poetic creations like the Birds Birds Birds, a composition of winged light bulbs that appear to take flight.
Ingo Maurer Chandeliers
Maurer’s chandeliers are striking statements—merging modern design with theatrical beauty. Standouts include the ethereal Birdie Chandelier, featuring delicate goose feather-covered bulbs, and the meditative Floatation Lamp, crafted from layers of Japanese rice paper that emit a warm, diffused glow. Another notable work is Lacrime del Pescatore ("Fisherman’s Tears"), a poetic suspension of nylon nets and glistening crystals—a tribute to Maurer’s roots and an elegant reflection on light, memory, and water.
