Stroke of Genius!  This has to be one of the coolest table lamps we have ever come across!  Japanese designer Naoto Fukasawa introduces Demetra; a minimal and functional table/desk/task lamp for the business or the home office.   What is imperative in the design of the Artemide Demetra Lamp is the careful reflection upon function and form in equal measure, their consideration from a minimalist perspective – and the inclusion of sculptural qualities in the process. For quite some time, manufacturers of decorative luminaires were hard hit by the innovation of LEDs. What to do with their traditional designs that were built around lamps and spots? They have since overcome the future shock and the industry is now fielding new products in all shapes and sizes.  One of the very elegant solutions is Naoto Fukasawa's Demetra Table Lamp which successfully transports the classic desk lamp into the here and now.

Stardust had a chance to talk to Naoto Fukasawa about his latest design. Here's what he had to say about the Artemide Demetra Lamp.  Demetra is the goddess of the harvest in Greek mythology. This is not only a reference to the physical aspect of my the Demetra desk lamp which I designed for Artemide but equally to the philosophical perspective, in the sense of "harvesting the benefits of a creative work environment".  In the case of the lamp Demetra, which is produced by Artemide, there is a single but strong new generation-type LED light which is mounted inside the round diffuser of the lamp shade. The light shines directly from the diffuser where a calculated reflector surface spreads the light on to a work plain for optimal reading/work comfort. At the same time this reflector is outfitted with either a dimmable- or motion sensor function which allows to the light to be dimmed according to your preferences.  I have also designed the Artemide Demetra Lamp with a functional interchangeable plug option to accommodate most electrical outlets for global diversity.  Naoto Fukasawa © stardust.com.

The Demetra Table Lamp was designed by Naoto Fukasawa for Artemide in Italy.  Naoto Fukasawa (b.1956) is one of the best-known Japanese product designers working today.  Fukasawa's design philosophy relies on carefully observing what people do and feel in their everyday lives in order to find simple solutions that touch the senses and link to shared memories.  Naoto Fukasawas's life and work are indelibly linked to his thoughts about how people live, and how they can live better.
